Acer Aspire One ARM Laptop-Complete Linux 6.10 Compatibility

With Linux 6.10, Acer Aspire One ARM Laptop Support
Over the past year, the majority of the Acer Aspire One Linux support has been up streamed; nonetheless, “nearly full support” for this laptop still requires the EC driver support. Completing the remaining components for a satisfactory Linux experience with this Acer ARM laptop was getting the embedded controller to function properly.
For the Linux 6.10 kernel cycle, the Acer Aspire One embedded controller driver is configured to be up streamed. Lid status detection, USB Type-C DP Alt Mode HPD, battery/charger monitoring, some keyboard configurations, and other associated EC functions require the EC driver. It took months for a custom driver to be reviewed and revised in order to support the EC.
Recently, the Acer Aspire One driver was queued into the platform-drivers-x86 for-next branch, indicating that it was meant to be submitted during the Linux 6.10 merging window that takes place the next month. Nearly 600 line driver and Device Tree code are ready for Linux 6.10. For Linux 6.10, the almost 600 line driver and related Device Tree code are available.

anyway reason for the greason: found a good deal on a Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 based Chromebook tablet, which is one of the handful of SoC's with halfway decent mainline kernel support. I have wanted a little ARM portable computer for basically as long as I have known that ARM existed.

Briefly fidgeted with current-generation chromeOS before doing this. I can see why you'd use it, it's perfectly pleasant as a system. High quality top-to-bottom integration, hilariously the chrome install even grandfathered in ublock origin so I had Adblock in Chrome on a Chromebook with zero effort. You can even install containerised Linux workloads with Google's blessing, if it's a personal system. If I wasn't a gremlin this would be pretty nice actually.
Linux obviously lacks some of the polish of more commercial operating systems when it comes to mobile support. Plasma's onscreen keyboard is bleak, Gnome is better but only a little. Accelerometer and pen input work perfectly on Plasma, Gnome needs some transforms and udev rules. Honestly this is going way better than I expected, historically booting Linux on mobile ARM SoC's has been a federal fucking issue.

Now I just have to pmbootstrap to dump this into the onboard eMMC (bleh) and it should be a perfectly respectable little machine. The 7c isn't going to win any drag races but it does stretch a minute 30Wh battery out to 12 hours. I should be able to charge this on a pretty mid-tier battery bank since I think it charges at like 9 volts.
I did consider grabbing the larger Duet 5 but I already have a 13" class device and as tempting as that big beautiful oled display is, I like small laptops. Really they shouldn't make them any bigger than 11".
What is a pirate's favourite processor?
It's the Qualcomm 7c!

Linux On Tablet is fraught but has gotten a lot better, I'm also Looking Longingly at the Framework 12 as a person with two Linux tablets with really fundamental issues.
I have an HP Envy x360 13" which is really nice except it's a 4500U based model and AMD just forgot to ever add sensor hub support to those on Linux so it can't detect orientation or when it's in tablet mode, which is uh. Important. I think a newer one of these with full sensor hub support would be incredible, someday I will have one.
The other is a Lenovo Duet 3 which is incredible, perfect little device, compact, lightweight, efficient tablet with almost perfect Linux support, except that it runs the Snapdragon 7C, a mid-range phone processor from six years ago that doesn't have good hardware acceleration support so it feels really chunky and slow even when it shouldn't be.
As for UI: KDE Plasma and GNOME both handle tablet mode Much Better now, with decent onscreen keyboards and rotation and scaling UI's that detect when you have a keyboard and mouse. There's also Plasma Mobile and Phosh which are Plasma and GNOME but optimized for phones, presenting a simplified app-drawer UI and fullscreen app experience, which is what I run on the ARM tablet. Plasma Mobile is so close to being really good, as it stands it's pretty good, you can swipe to bring in a settings drawer, there's a traditional 3-button navigation bar.
I can't really recommend either of these experiences but I related to being brain poisoned by the tabletpill beause it's such an obviously nice shape for a computer to be in.
I got 1-shot by this stupid ad around 2014 and ever since I have been astoundingly unsatisfied by every tablet in the world (Including this one! It's not good without Windows and I don't want Windows!)

Muscovite is an older Chromebook (Lenovo Duet 3) with the Snapdragon 7c, that and the Snapdragon 8cx are actually pretty well supported for ARM Linux, but it's still relatively niche and it's not supported by Qualcomm exactly, you need to jump through hoops and even then basic functions like "webcam" and "speakers" are quite flaky.
Support for ARM Linux notebooks is mostly through PostmarketOS, an Alpine-based distribution aimed at running Linux on android smartphones for extended support.
The 7c is not very powerful, it's basically a mid-tier smartphone processor from 2020 with dipping mustards, it's based on the 720G which you'd find in a Redmi Note 9 or Samsung A52. The 8cx is much better, it's a premium smartphone processor with dipping mustards, but there's basically only one laptop with it with a supported platform, the ThinkPad X13s, and even that still has compatibility issues.
The 8000 series isn't a bad idea, there's some really nice HP Envy 14" 2-in-1's with the 8000 series processors, but the battery life and thermal performance we're seeing in the 300 series reviews is pretty great.
Tuxedo Computers is working on an official mainline Linux laptop running the Snapdragon X, but they're still in development.
I may have a chance to acquire a new laptop for free from work.
My last laptop that I purchased was the immense MSI we've spoken of previously, and it lasted me about ten years (I mean the battery didn't, it was a mobile desktop for the last 5ish years, but still).
Since I'd probably be primarily running some flavor of Linux on it, I'd intended to get a current-gen Ryzen, but your recent posts about the Snapdragon processors have me curious. If you were to get a new computer today, for personal use (probably not gaming, I do all that on my desktop these days), what kind of hardware would you be after?
Snapdragon X really isn't up to real world use on Linux yet, so I'd give it a miss, honestly at the moment running Asahi on a MacBook would be better supported.
Current Ryzen is a great shout, probably one of the mid-spec ones would fit your needs well, like the Ryzen 7 AI 365. I'm not fully up on which manufacturers have models with the new 300 series Ryzen AI processors, I think Asus has some, but you might have to wait a month or so for everyone to roll out their designs. Just watch out, there's been a ton of Ryzen releases so it's easy to mix up the recent but not new 8000 series with the new 300 series, which have pretty sizeable efficiency differences.
With anything modern a consideration is that DDR5 will pretty much always be soldered, so you have to get enough RAM when you buy, but that shouldn't be an issue if your employer is getting it.
